Spa Career Insights: Is a Spa Environment Right for You?

Question
Hi Michael,
I'm wondering what it's like to work in a spa environment.  I've been working for 2 years at a business that offers only massage therapy; I'm doing well and pretty happy there, but I'm always wondering if a spa environment would be more fun. Do MT's generally make less when they work at a spa?  Are there other benefits to working at a resort or spa?
Thanks, Lora

Answer
Thanks for your questions, Lora.

From my experience, every spa environment is different ... there are those which are satisfactory to work in and others, not...it's all relative to the individual MT. In most instances, I would suggest that in the spa environment I would not consider it to be fun when there is little time for rest between sessions since most spas are in business for revenue and the MT is the means to that revenue. MT's are generally paid slightly higher than minimum wage/hr for time spent on property, plus moderate commission %age,   tips (benefits vary based on ownership).  In few spas, MT's (independent contractors) are paid commission   tips (seldom are benefits available from ownership).

If you're an overall people person, sometimes you can also hobnob with the guests at a resort if permitted by management.

Hope that  helps you,

Michael, LMT
