QuestionHi I am a handmade jewellery enthusiast, can you tell me how to make the firecoat and how to use it i was told you have to dip it in then burn it off is that right? i have denatured alcahol and boric acid powder already also is there a way you can but it already mixed as i have a fear of chemicles since i tried to clean something with caustic soda i put in the mop and it had residue of bleach in the mop the whole thing started smoking and when i pick it up the bucket was so hot i thought it was going to explode, i ran and got a sock to breath whilst i discarded it down the loo with lots of water my heart was pumping, also can you tell me of a place in the uk that sells all what we need and a list of what i need please thank you
AnswerHi Tracey,
It is very simple,
1- In a small glass jar you will put 200ml. of denatured alcohol and 3 spoons of boric acid, does
not have to be measured to perfection and the mixture does not have to be too heavy.
2- Deep the piece of jewelry in the mixture and fire it till it goes off naturally, it will form
a white coat around the piece of jewelry.
3- Do this 2 times and the coating will be little heavier and will protect the jewelry better.
4- Now you are ready to fire that piece as much as you need.
5- To remove it you need a pickle and pickle acid which should be hot enough to remove the boric
acid from the jewelry piece.
Usually you can get all this in a hobby shop or a jewelry supplies store.
here is a link to one of them, http://www.jewel-toolcraft.co.uk/
Hope it helps,
