QuestionHi Bill abd Sally,
I am an acupuncturist working from my home and would also like to take a professional distance learning course in Gemology through an institution like G.I.A. I think it's such a fascinating field. If I become a Gemologist through G.I.A., will it be difficult to get clients to come to my own home or office, will I have enough experience to work for myself immediately, or will it be necessary or even mandatory for me to work for someone else or a firm for a certain period?
Thank you for any advice!
Mike Eidson, LAc.
AnswerHello Mike - Gemology is a wonderfully interesting field, but like any other field, to make a profession of it you need to treat it like any other business. After you are certified, it might be a good idea to work with another professional or in the jewelry field - jewelry store, manufacturer, etc. Or you could offer your services free or at little cost to estate appraisers for the experience and referrals.
Marketing is a part of any small business. Advertising in local directories, leaving business cards in places where there may be a need i.e. antique malls, jewelry conventions. Join professional affiliations. In other words "spread the word" that you are available. Like any other business, it takes hard work and time to become established. A small office would probably be preferable since you would need equipment to do any appraisals and most people are not comfortable with coming to a private home. Become a part of your local business community. They offer a lot of support to new businesses.
Good Luck !
Sally
