QuestionI am ordering a new 3mm 4 prongs platinum setting from a jeweler to mount it with my own diamond from my old engagement ring. Should the "PT950" marking inside the band be very visible? The setting looked like it had already been worked on. The jeweler says it's because the manufacturer didn't have my size and had to size it down. Is this routine practice?
I found this website by google, looking for ring resizing info
thank you for your help!
AnswerBetty, thanks for the question.
With the "stock" sizes from manufacturers changing to accompdate the larger finger sizes encountered today, what used to be regularly supplied in a stock size 6 is often a stock size 7 today. While we do have to resize more rings up nowadays than in years past, we often have to resize the stock 7's to 6 or 5 or so. It is not a surpise that a manufaturer does not have your size in stock if not a 7 or close to that.
LOOKS WORKED ON. Yikes! This should not be the case. The quality mark(metal mark) and the makers mark are by law to be together in the ring band. Generally, these are off to the side so resizing and subsequent finishing work will not sand away the marks. If marked right where the sizing is done, the ring should have been restamped. In any regard, a new ring should NEVER appear worked on or anything less than brand new. I suspect if the ring looks "worked on" the one doing the resizing did not take the time to properly finish off the work. If done by a local jeweler who is adept at platinum work, there should be no indication that the ring has been resized.
Not all jewelers are adept at platinum work. Finishing platinum takes about 5 times the labor of white gold sizing and slightly different techniques than with gold.
Is the jeweler who ordered the new ring the same one who will set your stone? This jeweler should assure you that any signs of resizing will be taken care of so your new ring will be brand new looking when you get it. The platinum stamp for 950 platinum may be either PT950 or simply PT, Plat or Platinum. When only the platinum mark is used, by law the item must be of the 950 quality. The mark should be quite ledgible and clear, even if slightly sanded from resizing. The inside of the ring should be brigthly polished.
It is routine practice for a manufacturer to resize(for a price) to the jeweler. We simply get the stock size and do the resizing here at our shop since we can assure the work is right and the size matches our measuring devices. Some jewelers do not work platinum and will have the work done by the maker from whom the ring is ordered.
The jeweler should be able to assure you the ring will look brand new when done. That is the simple of it! : )

Betty, thanks again. I do hope this helps.
