How to Preserve Gold-Plated Jewelry: Preventing Wear and Extending Shine

Question
Hi, I am a jewelry-making instructor for a craft store chain.  Recently, I purchased their new Metal Madness chain, made a necklace & matching bracelet & earrings, and found that after wearing the set one day that the gold plating had partially worn off--very frustraing, having spent a whole day making the set.  Is there some kind of coating or varnish I can buy and put on the chain so this won't happen?

Answer
Misti, I saw the Metal Madness chains Michaels sells..is this the same item?  Too bad about the plate since some customers likely will not be too happy with the results, either.

Honestly, if the plate is that thin and not durable at all, there is little to do that is practical. Almost nothing will work.

The only possible solution is one I totally hesitate to recommend since it also has definite problems. That is a coat of the clear lacquer used for brass band instruments or perhaps another clear lacquer for metals.  The problems? First, unless constantly in motion while the lacquer dries the links will be lacquered together! The second problem is the lacquer will also start to peel and will look terrible after a while.

You see, there is not much of a real solution to this vexing and frustrating problem with the chain. The chain should honestly do better than that.

Let me know if you need any more info.
