Resizing Platinum Engagement Rings: Options & Diamond Security

Question
Hi, I just recently got engaged (ie. Yesterday)!  The size of my ring is 5.5 and is slightly big.  The ring has a 1.25 caret diamond in the centre with channel set diamonds going to about half the ring.  What are the best options to re-size the ring to ~ a size 5.  Do I use the balls (which would also prevent the ring from turning) or is cutting a piece out of the shank the better option.  My concerns, are if the channel set diamonds become loose in the re-sizing process, also, if I were to gain weight or get pregnant I might not be able to wear my ring, so the balls option may be favourable.  Please let me know.

Thanks,
jane

Answer
congratulations!!!
this is a good question as sizing the ring smaller may loosen the diamonds depending on who is doing the sizing. An experienced jeweler will not bend the ring from the top section only the sides and bottom section and may leave the ring slightly oval. I would not be concerned about just 1/2 size down unless the channel is very thin.....without looking at the ring I cant tell and its only a guess.
Make sure you have the jeweler check all the stones after sizing while you are still in the store, if any stones are loose they can hammer them down with a tool and tighten them all. To see any loose stones, some jewelers have a vibrating machine which shows the loose stones, otherwise you can take a tweezer and slightly move each stone to test which takes longer.
bottom line.......an experienced jeweler will NOT have any problem sizing down 1/2 size
all the best
