QuestionI bought a diamond ring with the markings 500 PT 400 Pd, which I assume is Platinum and Palladium. I need to have the ring sized up 1 size. (I read in one of the other questions that their palladium ring melted when it was heated).
Will a bench jeweler have a problem with doing this?
Will it make the ring brittle by sizing it upward?
Is there a way to stretch the ring 1 size without damaging it?
Thanks
AnswerHello Gayle and thank you for your inquiry. I am not familiar with the process for sizing rings. I would get a referal to an experienced jewelry repair professional and explain your concerns about having the work done on your ring. I did find the following information :
"Platinum can be a difficult metal for professionals to work with. A platinum ring sizing, for instance, takes about 3 hours of work, whereas gold rings are typically sized in about 15 minutes. "Platinum is much more difficult to format and polish and requires a much higher temperature to change the metal's shape."
It wouldn't hurt to get the jeweler's response in writing or guarantee form. Sorry I couldn't help you further.
