Identifying Gold Jewelry: Understanding 'CT 18750' Markings
QuestionI purchased a bracelet which is either costume or gold. I am only questioning if it could be gold because of a mark on it. Normally I never would have even thought twice bout it. It is very heavy. The writing is in a trapezoid shape I believe and it says CT 18750 . i believe the 18750 i below the CT as I do not have the piece with me. I realize I could bring it to a jeweler, but I never know if they are being 100% honest! So since it driving me crazy, I was hoping you might be able to shed some light on the subject. Maybe it is a vintage jeweler's mark and I just could not find it on any net site.
AnswerHello Leslie and thank you for your inquiry. The only way to tell if your item is gold since it is not marked is by having it tested. This is usually done professionally by a jeweler or gemologist. Ask your local antique mall or museum for a referral to someone able to test it for you. The only company I have in my resources for CT would be Cheever, Tweedy & Co in Denver Colo. They were in business in the 1930's. As far as I can tell, however, they did not use a number in their hallmark. Just the initials. The number could be a design #. There are online appraisal sites that will work from a good photograph. One of them is "What's It Worth To You" and they charge a small fee. Try first to have it tested locally. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance and good luck.
