Identifying Vintage Wedding Rings: History & Value
Question
Wedding Set
Hello again -
I have a set of wedding rings that is rather old, and I suppose considered costume, but I'm not sure. They very much resemble what is on the market today. They are stamped on the inside, but it's hard to tell what it says. Wondering if you could tell me anything about when they might have been made, etc. The stones, while a little clouded from sitting around in a junk shop, do not have any chips or scratches, which I found amazing considering what the bands look like.
Thanks much!
AnswerHello Lucy and thank you for your inquiry. Your rings are very pretty and appear to be silver in color, which could mean they are sterling or white gold. In order to determine this they would have to be professionally tested using acid. If there are any markings as to gold or silver content that would, of course, help if you can read it. The stones may also be real, which would also have to be checked by a professional. Silverplate rings were also made in wedding sets and used mostly rhinestone or paste stones. These rings usually had closed backs. Most genuine stones have open back for light reflection. Visit your local museum or antique shop for a referral to someone who can test these for you. Enjoy your rings !
