Sapphire Damage in Engagement Ring: Mounting Concerns & Fracture Identification

Question
http://en.allexperts.com/just/Jewelry-Gems-Minerals-689/Help-Sapphire-damage-mou...

Apologies for this not being the most exciting of questions but I've just had my ring returned from the jewelers because the sapphire was a little loose and on close examination it is clear there are two internal fractures inside..... I know these were not there before and have seen the above post.  I am so upset (it is a new engagement ring) and think that when mounting it they have caused this to happen... could this be the case?   The claws are now on very tightly and even look as if hot metal has been soldered onto the stones to ensure no movement.

Could this mounting it cause this to happen?  Is it easy to tell what may have caused the imperpections - eg if i showed it to a different expert would they say it might have been caused by the mounting?

Any help would be so appreciated.

All the best

Alice

Answer
Hi,

Yes it is possible but hard to prove. Sounds like they re-tipped the prongs with the stone in place.  Experts could only offer an opinion,
but again it is only just an opinion not a fact.

Sorry for your mishap.

Good luck,
