Gold Soldering for Jewelry: A Beginner's Guide to Strong, Durable Joints

Question
Is there an easy way to gold solder.  I have several bracelets that I like to wear and I am hard in them.  I often pull open the jump rings.  I also wear nail jewelery and use 14k jump rings.  I would love to be able to solder them closed so they last longer.  I have used regular solder with an iron in the past. Even though the spot is very small it is very noticeable to me. I have been reading on-line about gold soldering and have learned about torches and melt temps and flow temps, etc. and that is all too much work for what I want.  Besides, obviously there is no way I can torch a jump ring that is on my fingernail!!  I have tried superglue on the nail rings and that just doesn't hold up. Actually, all I need is something that is gold in color to solder.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Kerry, if you want the jump rings soldered closed and to keep the gold color, you will have to stick with gold.  Other yellow metals will tarnish badly and gold plated items will loose the color from soldering.

Actually, I have put the last of your question first with the answer above.  The question is about an easy way to solder.  Kerry, if there was an affordable easier way to do it I would be using an easier way!  The only ways besides a torch used small electric welders and lasers.   The link shows a welder:

Next would be a jewelry laser, at about $30,000 US.

You see, a torch is the least expensive means and there simply is not and easier way unless the machines mentioned above are used.

Best wishes with your jewelry...a jeweler could solder the bracelet rings but not the fingernail ones.

God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
