QuestionI purchased 2 pyrite stones aprroximately 3"x3" . How can i break them up or crush to use in jewelry i make imbedded in resin. Can i use a hammer with the rock inside a container ? Thank you Carol Smith
AnswerCarol, thanks for this question. Pyrite is often a striking and lovely mineral. I can see why you would want to use it in your jewelry.
Yes, the pyrite can be broken up with a hammer. However, you must keep in mind that some pyrite is more toxic than others and dust should not be allowed to remain on the skin or be breathed. You may smell sulfur from the freshly broken pieces. What you will not smell is a possible arsenic content which in some forms of pyrite. The content is low but precautions should be taken not to handle excessively, breath the dust or ingest.
I have not used this suggested method for pyrite but have for other mineral material. Get two thick plastic bags and double bag the pyrite. Strike firmly with the hammer. Check for holes punched in the plastic and add another bag if needed. When the pieces are about the sizes you need, open the bags and rinse with water to remove dust. Pour out the pieces onto paper towels to dry. Take the bags and small residue contained along with the paper towels and dispose. I have used a piece of leather to place between a hammer and the mineral to prevent pieces flying back at me and to protect the hammer face but this was not complete containment. With the pyrite I suggested the plastic bags to prevent scattering of dust and debris which would be difficult to recover otherwise.
Carol, I wish you the best looking jewelry you can create with the pyrite.
God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
