Restoring Vintage Costume Jewelry: Repairing Scratches & Flakes

Question
I buy vintage costume jewelry from the US and resell it at markets and fairs in Australia.  Some pieces are in great condition except for small flakes of gold or silver metal that has chipped from the piece. Can you tell me if there is a gold or silver paint, or some way to touch up these tiny chipped flakes on the vintage costume jewelry?
Thanks,
Trish

Answer
Hello Trish and thank you for your inquiry. Some costume jewelry pieces lose their plate after a time and I would suggest replate only if the piece is very collectible or valuable as it is an expensive and difficult process. I have used the gold craft pens in a pinch to cover a small area and then cover with clear nail lacquer. Before selling, however, always disclose that your item has been restored to protect your dealer reputation. Hope this helps !
