Tiffany Earring Repair Cost: Is $15 Reasonable?

Question
QUESTION: I brought a pair of silver hoop tiffany earrings to the jewelers because one of the little pins that goes into your ear broke off. It wasn't expensive to repair... just 15.00 but I was just wondering out of curiousity if that sounded right? I've never brought anything to the jewelers until now.

ANSWER: Hi Melissa, Thanks for the question. No, you were not overcharged at all. $15 is very reasonable. Silver is harder to work on than Gold, and takes a bit more finesse, especially for a Tiffany design which he will always take more care, not to mention the materials, insurance, overhead etc. Sound like you have a good jeweler there. Good Luck.

QUESTION: He seemed very nice. I like him a lot.
The only thing is he said it would be ready today and then when I went to pick it up he said he couldn't solder it and had to send it to get laser soldered.
is that common for silver? Does that sound right?
He did say it won't cost any extra but I was just curious. Are my tiffany earrings not real if they need laser soldering?
Thanks again you've been very helpful.
And just out of curiousity (because i sell vintage jewelry and use to work with metals on a beginners level) what makes silver harder to work with than gold? I just ask because I know there is a silver solder and basic solder, but how do they repair gold jewelry? Is there gold solder?
Thanks again.

Answer
Hi again, Its actually to your benefit that they were laser soldered, which is a better bond heat vs. metal. The jeweler acutally lost money on your transaction but he must be of high integrity to not take the easy way out like a lot of them do and do an inferior job. Enjoy!
