Gold Chain Karat Testing: A Guide Using Acid Testing Kits

I have a acid testing kit. What is the best way to test a very delicate gold chain to be sure that it is the karat gold stated?  Can I use the acid scrap on the stone or will I have to file somewhere?   Thanks, Jim

rub your test item on the stone and rub the different Karat keys next to it on the stone, apply a small streak of HCL ACID and watch the reaction between your test item and the keys, when the test and key item disappear at the same time you will know....
