QuestionAre there toggle clasps made with stainless steel? I have searched and searched. My boyfriend works with stainless steel chainmail and would like to use a toggle clasp that is just as strong. Any ideas or recommendations?
Thank you in advance.
Cindy
AnswerHi, Cindy.
I have not seen toggle clasps made of steel which are available for sale as a clasp set only. The clasp consists, of course, of a loop for one end and a "cross bar" toggle for the other end. Where I work, there are a couple of stainless steel bracelets with toggles. To purchase the clasp alone is not an item I have seen. The reason for that despite the inexpensive nature of steel compared to precious metals is the demand is likely very low. Manufacturers would be the customers or generally make their own as part of a product.
I have not checked their "findings" catalog but this company is one of the few I can think of which might have the toggles in stainless. If not in the catalog, give them a call and ask:
www.riogrande.com RioGrande has been in the business a very long time and is dependable.
Other than that, I might recommend your boyfriend try to make the clasp. The loop end should be little trouble and the toggle might be more involved, requiring a crossbar to fit the loop and a loop attached to it to go to a bracelet. The bar itself might be formed with a loop in the center by folding the steel wire over a small round mandrel(steel rod) then adding small loops to it to attach to the bracelet. If he makes the mail, it is easy. If not, it will take some trying to learn to bend the metal. Wire as used for welding stainless will be ideal to use. Even cut off ends from MIG welders for stainless will work well.
Sorry I cannot give a vendor. Try Rio then if that is a wash try making the clasp. Fair enough?
I hope your boyfriend get the clasp he needs. God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
