QuestionI inherited a strand of pearls which have a knot in between each, and a pretty stamped silver clasp.
Can you tell if they are real pearls please? Are there any tests I can do to find out ?
AnswerPearls are extemely difficult to distinguish. Basically there are three types of pearl, no matter what the shape.
They are natural pearls, cultured pearls and thirdly, false or simulated pearls.
The stringing (with knots between) is a clue as to identification, but cannot be relied upon for full verification.
In Europe, particularly in the 19th and 20th century, a false or simulated strand of pearls was often given to a young girl by her parents or grandparents. These would often be strung with a silver clasp, to further make them apppear as 'real'.
If you send me some photographs, I can give you better advice. Please send them direct to 'info@collectablesnet.com'.
I hope this helped, and will do my best to help you further. Kindly ensure your images are clear, taken against a white or cream background, and of low resolution. Take one of the front, the back and a close-up of the clasp, back and front.
Kind regards
Erica
