Living with One Fallopian Tube: Risks & Fertility After Ovarian Cyst Removal
QuestionI had a fallopian tube removed due to an ovarian cyst, what are the risks of only having a right fallopian tube? Are my chances of getting pregnant cut in half? What happens to the eggs that my left ovary produces, I feel like my reproductive system is all screwed up due to the ovarian cyst that they removed along my my left fallopian tube. I am only 18 and not thinking about kids but I do want some in the far future.
AnswerTypically, chances for pregnancy are good, even with one tube. Cumulative pregnancy rates tend to be similar with increased time to conception in the absence of one tube as long as the other is healthy. Ovulation from your left side can on some occasions be picked up by the right tube so there is still a chance for pregnancy if you ovulate from the left. Of course, other factors may be involved since you had a cyst and you should discuss fertility with your MD given your healthy. Even though you may no be planning anything soon, information is valuable and may help your planning in the future.
