QuestionI had a question regarding listeriosis. If you have contracted this, can it go away on its own?
I am wondering if i may have contracted it about 2 or 3 months ago. I was about 4 months pregnant and i came down with a fever and body aches and nothing else. It was around the time the flu was going around, so i thought maybe that was it. But i called my doctor and he told me that if my fever didnt go away to come in, otherwise, i was ok just to take Tylenol. I took Tylenol about 3 or 4 times and my fever finally went away. I had it for about 1 1/2 days. Then after my fever went away i was fine. But during the time i was very achey and didnt get out of bed at all. and nauseated. but no other symptoms.
I had eaten a chicken salad the night before and the next day i felt nauseous and that night is when i got the fever.
could this have been food poisoning? If so - is there any chance my baby was affected during all of that and that she could be still born or whatever they say happens if you get food poisoning?
I have read it can cause death and birth defects, but i wasn't sure if that was at the time of illness or at the time of birth.
Any suggestions you have would be helpful!
THANK YOU!
AnswerIt sounds like you had a mild flu and some nausea from the chicken. It does not sound like food poisoning nor Listeriosis nor Salmonella poisoning. Since the Tylenol took care of the fever, and you did not go into labor, there will be no problem with the baby. You did not mention how high the fever was. As long as the fever was not higher than 102 degrees F, I would not worry about yourself at all. Sometimes, if you have a fever of over 103-104 and do not bring it down with Tylenol or with a cool bath, you can go into preterm labor. Food poisoning is manifested with pulsatile vomiting and you would be much sicker than you described. Don't worry, and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.
