Understanding Pre-Planned Cesarean Sections: Risks & Considerations

Question
I will be giving birth to my first baby in October and I had read an article in Parenting magazing about how more are more women are requesting cesarean sections. They are doing so because they are concerned about the size of the baby and the risk of incontenence following a vaginal delivery. My hausband and I were both over 8 pounds (I was 8 lbs 6 oz and he was 8 lbs 11 oz) we both also 21 1/2" long. My mother had a vaginal birth with me, but forceps were needed because I was so large and she had over 200 stitches from tearing both inside and out and she also has problems with incontinence. The doctors later told her that she should have had a c-section. I am worried that my baby is going to be at least 8 pounds or larger and I am fairly petite. (5' 3" and my pre-pregnancy weight was about 115 pounds.) Should I discuss the possibility of a pre-planned c-section for the birth of my son with my ob/gyn, and do you think that my concerns are justified? I am just nervous since this is my first baby and I want everything to go safely and smoothly. We have also found outh through ultrasound that he will be born with clubfeet, so I don't know if that will further complicate a vaginal delivery. Thank you for your time, and I apologize if this is a long and odd question, I just wasn't sure where else to go to find the answers. Any information you can provide for me would help a lot for when I go to my next OB appointment. Thank you again.

Answer
Hello Melissa. I regret that you have left this info search so LATE- you must go to a website called Nancy Wainer Cohen- this lady has dedicated her life to midwifery and the education about c/sections. To be fully informed about sections and all the different choices, you need to read her two books- Open Season and The Silent Knife. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you fully educate yourself about your different birth choices. They can affect you for the rest of your life. You might also enjoy a site called BirthLove. And try gathering info from the International Childbirth Education Association. Hope that helps- Cheri.
