My newborn seems to have an upset belly all the time, he's always tightening up his mid section and grunting, almost as if it's painful.  Is this an upset stomach, and what can i do for him?
Answer -
Hello Courtney- first I need to know if you are breastfeeding, how often, any vomitting? Get back to me with the answers- Cheri

Hello, Cheri.  I am breastfeeding, usually every 2 hours, sometimes more frequently.  Very seldom is there vomiting, maybe once a day at a very small quantity, perhaps less than half a tsp.

Answer
Okay Courtney- sounds like old fashioned colic. In a breastfed baby, this means that Mom must do some altering to her diet and the first thing we remove is any form of cow's milk. So, you must stop drinking ANY milk, no cheese, no butter, no yogurt, no cream in your coffee, no cooking that includes milk. It can take 2 weeks to clear all the dairy products from your digestive system, so be patient. I suspect you will see an improvement in just a few days though. This does not mean that you can't eat dairy for the whole time you are breastfeeding. When your baby is about 12 weeks old, you can start slowly introducing it back and see how it goes. Also- get in contact with your local La Leche League group and start attending their great info sessions- LLL is the TRUE expert about breastfeeding and you will meet lots of other nursing Moms there. All the best- Cheri.
