Umbilical Cord Care: Advice for New Parents - Is Bathing Okay?

my daughter's umbilical cord fell off today. it looks raw and tender. can i give her a bath? should i put anythung on it? will alcohol burn? what about a&d ointment?

Hello Janis, do not put ANYTHING on it. The very best treatment is to bathe her and allow it to dry out normally in the air. Yes, alcohol will burn and further damage the tissues. It is fine as long as it does not start oozing or smell bad. Try to keep the diaper folded down so it can dry out. Hope that helps- Cheri.
