QuestionHi, I am 30 and am 39wks pregnant, this is my second child, the first being 28mths old.
My question is this. My baby has the cord around her neck and although my doctor is not pressurising me he has advised that a caesarian is the best route to take for delivery. I would like to have the procedure to be done this friday (4 days time) I am concerned that waiting too much longer will endanger the baby further. What exactly are the ramifications of the cord being around the neck (its only around once but quite tight) - is there risk of oxygen deprivation or damage to the throat, voice box etc. Please could you enlighten me.
Your advice is much appreciated, thankyou
AnswerHow do you know that the cord is around the baby's neck? A sonogram cannot show whether a cord is tightly around the neck or loosely around the neck. (We are not worried about the neck, but we worry that the cord itself can be constricted and prevent flow of oxygen through the cord to the baby). However, we usually do not notice that the cord is around the neck (or shoulders, or legs, etc) until you are in labor and are delivering. I don't know how it could have been noticed. If the cord was tightly wrapped around the neck, and there was a drop in fetal heartbeat or fetal distress, then you would already have had a cesarean section. If the heartbeat is good, there is no reason to rush to a cesarean section.
