Understanding Ectopic Pregnancy: Ultrasound vs. hCG Levels
QuestionhI I WROTE TO YOU THE OTHER DAY ABOUT EPTOPIC OR JUST TOO SMAL TO SEE,.
TODAY I WENT TO THE DOCTOR AND THEY DID 2 SONOGRAMS, THEY FOUND THE YOUK SAC IN THE UTERUS, BUT THEY SAY IT DOSNET MATCH UP TO MY BLOOD WORK, MY BLOOD WORK HCG WAS 3115 AND THEN 5700, THEY SAY I SHOULD SHOW MORE ON SONOGRAM BY WHAT THE BLOOD WORK SHOWS, THEY SAY IS IS PROBALLY AN ABNORMAL PREGNANCY AND TOLD ME TO COME BACL IN A WEEK, IS THERE A CHANCE THAT MY BABY WILL SURVIVE WITH THE BLOOD WORK AND JUST A SMALL YOLK SAC. THANK YOU
AnswerI don't remember what you said was the first day of your last period, so I do not know how far pregnant you should be at this time. HOwever, since your HCG values almost doubled, it is a good sign of a healthy fetus. A sonogram should not be done before 6-7 weeks from the first day of your last period because at less than 6 weeks from your last period a sonogram will only show an empty gestational sac (yolk sac). This cannot, very often, be measured accurately enough to say that it is too small or too large. After 6-7 weeks from the first day of your period, you should see a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. If you do not see the fetus, the date of your last period may be incorrect and you may merely be off on your dates. There is no way to say that your pregnancy is "probably an abnormal pregnancy" at this time. Repeat the sonogram in a week. There is a very good chance that you still have a viable pregnancy.
