Headaches in Pregnancy: What to Know (Weeks 17-28)

Question
I am 24 this is my first pregnancy and my last menstral cycle was march 23rd. I am due Dec. 29th. I have a headache and took tylenol an hour ago. My headache is still there. I know this is a sign of preeclampsia. Should I be concerned?

Answer
You are now only 17 weeks 5 days pregnant. Preeclampsia is not seen (ever) prior to 28 weeks gestation. The signs of preeclampsia are hypertension, protein in your urine, and edema of your hands, face, and legs. Headache can be seen throughout pregnancy and, by itself, is not a sign of preeclampsia. Take tylenol (three tablets every 4 hours) and if it does not help after several hours, call your doctor for some stronger medication. Tylenol does not always have an effect after only one hour. Don't worry about preeclampsia this early in your pregnancy.
