Bladder & Rectocele During Pregnancy: Risks & Considerations

Question
I have just been diagnosed with a bladder prolapse and rectocele.  (both are exposed) My question is will this cause complications with another vaginal delivery?  If I were to end up with a  c-section, I would probably have this fixed now before I get pregnant...  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
Jennifer

Answer
Jennifer:  Cystocele & rectocele will not cause any "complications" during pregnancy, per se.  Whether or not another pregnancy will cause progression of your problems is anybody's guess, but oftentimes it will.  The jury is still out re: the protective value of a c-section on a woman's pelvic floor -- some studies seem to indicate that the stress of pregnancy, itself, is enough to do damage.

The general concensus seems to be that prolapse repairs should be put off until after a woman completes her family.  Subsequent pregnancy(s) would likely compromise any repair work done.  There are NEVER any guarantees with these things and when undergoing repairs, it is wise to give oneself the absolute best chance at a successful, long-term outcome by following those recommendations.

In the interim, avoid heavy lifting, straining with constipation, treat coughs/sneezes immediately.  Anything that increases intraabdominal pressure will likely exacerabate symptoms.

For treatment, please see a urogynecologist (if you haven't already).  These are specialists in treating women with pelvic organ prolapse and/or incontinence.  A teaching institution in your area is a good place to look, or you can try the American Urogynecologic Society website at:  www.augs.org .

Best of luck to you!
