Ruptured Membranes at 27 Weeks: What to Expect & Fetal Viability
QuestionI have a friend that is at 27 weeks and her water broke. I thought that you had to have the baby within a certain time frame once your water breaks. Also what is the baby's chance of survival at 27-29 weeks? My friend has been admitted to the hospital and the doctors say that once she is past 28 weeks she should be ok. but her water broke... please advise...
thanks
AnswerHello Leslie. In midwifery practice, we do not insist on delivery within 24 hours after rupture of the membranes. The amniotic fluid continues to be made even if the membranes are open. Unfortunately the WORST place for your friend is in the hospital where there are pathogens everywhere. She is MUCH more likely to get an infection there than at home. Her baby will likely have some big challenges being born even at 28 weeks. If it is a girl, it has a better chance. All the best- Cheri.
