Subchronic Hematoma in Pregnancy: Symptoms, Management & Concerns

Question
Hi ,

I have been diagnosed with Subchroniac Haemorrhage from 6 weeks of pregnancy onwards..Currently I am in my 10 the week...Bleeding (red/brown) stopped around one week back and there was no spotting of any kind...But yesterday it started again with few drops of bright red blood..I am on bed rest..My OB is not sure of the reasons and advises bed rest only..U/S shows baby is active with good hearbeat od 160

1. Can I take any medications to prevent this bleeding ?
2. Will this have any harm on the development of baby?
3. What precautions need to be taken to prevent miscarriage?
4. What are my chance of success?..

Pls advise

Thanks

Answer
If the bleeding is due to the subchorionic hemorrhage, it will not cause any harm to the developing baby and should stop on its own and resorb. If, however, the bleeding is not due to the subchorionic hemorrhage, it can be a threatened abortion and nothing can be done. With a threatened abortion, 50% will stop bleeding and all will be fine, and 50% will continue to bleed and the baby will miscarry. There is a 15-20% chance of miscarriage in any pregnancy. There is nothing you can do to stop a miscarriage and there is nothing you can do to cause a miscarriage. I would just stay on bedrest until the bleeding stops. There is a good chance that you will continue with a normal pregnancy. There are no medications to take to stop or prevent bleeding. Just be patient. Do not do any heavy lifting or exercise or sex until the bleeding stops. Good Luck.
