Fish Consumption During Pregnancy: Safety & Guidelines

Question
Can pregant women eat fish.
I'm 11 weeks pregant and I had an xray in the early part of this pregancy will it harm my baby.

Answer
Women who are pregnant or lactating should eat no more than 12 ounces of fish and shellfish per week. No more than 6 of those 12 ounces should be in the form of albacore tuna. Five of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish. Those are the fish you can eat. You sholuld avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel, or tilefish, which contain high levels of mercury. X-rays during pregnancy can cause problems if taken during the first trimester without shielding your abdomen. What kind of X-ray did you have in the early part of your pregnancy? A chest X-ray or dental X-rays are O.K. because they usually shield your abdomen with a lead apron during the X-ray. If you were not shielded, there is no way to determine what effect the radiation had on the baby. Hopefully, you were not exposed to enough radiation to cause any harm to the baby.
