Understanding Fetal Fibronectin Testing During Pregnancy
QuestionI am 35, have one 4 year old child and am 31 weeks pregnant. I am currently at home on bedrest due to my cervix shortening to 2.5 and it is soft. As of right now my cervix is still closed. My other child was born 4 1/2 weeks premature. Can you please explain to me what the fetal fibernectomy (not sure of the spelling) test is exactly and where I can find more information on it.
AnswerFetal fibronectin is a substance that is found in cervicovaginal secretions and can be a marker for decidual disruption. When it is found in secretions between 24-36 weedks gestation, it can be a predictor of preterm labor. Its presence usually precedes the preterm labor by more than 3 weeks. If it is not present in the secretions, it is a good sign that preterm labor will probably not occur. You can research under "Fetal Fibronectin" or Diagnosis of Preterm Labor.
