Understanding Persistent Bumps in the Genital Area: Causes & Relief

Question
I often get pea sized hard bumps on the outside of my vagina, the inner thigh, and the inside of the vagina at least one every other week. i have asked the doc about them only to be to they are ingrown hair bumps, and to put a hot towel on them to burst them. I have had this problem now for about 7 years. when the burst there is white thick fluid that comes out. It is really irritating and uncomfortable during sex. What could these bumps be?

Answer
It is impossible for me to diagnose dermatologic conditions via E mail. Most likely, what you describe is "folliculitis" which is due to inflamed hair follicles. It can be caused by infections, physical or chemical irritation, occlusive dressings, clothing,  or use of some medications. It is very common in the obese or diabetic patient  or one who is immunocompromised. Folliculitis can appear as a pustule or papule with a central hair. The central hair shaft may not always be visible.  They usually crop up in a gridlike pattern on hair bearig areas of the body ( face, scalp, body folds, groin, thigh. They elicit mild discomfort and cosmetic concern and sometimes white "sebum" can be extruded from them.  Treatment can be achieved with antibiotics, such as erythromycin 2% or Clindomycin 1% solution.  Your best bet would be to consult with a dermatologist, who can identify the problem and address the issue.
