Questiondoctor rappaport,
first of all, thank you for volunteering your time on this site! i know there are a lot of us out there who appreciate it!
secondly, the last i can link dates in my journal with having been on my period is 04/05. i don't typically keep up with the exact dates, and i don't know if i'm "regular," but i do have a period every month. i realized last week i hadn't had one yet, so i purchased an HPT. it was negative. i have since tested using a more sensitive test, and it was negative, as well (as recently as 05/21).
i'm having a tiny bit of abdominal discomfort, but i think that might be chalked up to nerves.
i have read online that obesity or a weight gain can cause a missed period, but i can't find any details. i'm 21 years old, 5'3", and weigh 200 lbs. can you please explain how obesity could affect the cycle and when i should become worried? i plan to test again this coming weekend, but the not knowing is driving me insane! either pregnant or not, i'll be happy with the outcome, but i can't be happy until i have a definite answer one way or the other (and i hate needles, so i want to avoid the blood test as long as possible).
thank you!
AnswerIf you remember getting your period every month, you probably have a 28-30 day cycle (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period). Sometimes, you can occasionally miss a period from time to time. It does not necessarily mean that there is a problem. Sometimes, as well, obesity will cause you to stop menstruating for several months. This is also seen in gymnasts and long distance runners. There is an ideal weight above which and below which menstruation ceases. I doubt that your weight is such a problem. If you do not getyour period next month, perhaps you should make an appointment with your gyecologist to evaluate what is occurring. Your period can be induced using Provera 10mg twice a day for five days and you should get your period within ten days. If not, further tests will be done. Don't worry.
