Several months ago I posted a question to you regarding low but doubling adequately HCG numbers."I am 41, with 2 children ages 4.5 and 2. My LMP was 9-20-2005.
I transferred 2 embryos on 10-7 and have had HCg readings of 62(11 day past transfer), 194 (14 day past transfer) and 615 (17 days past transfer)
My doc - who I love and trust and have been working with for 7 years, is being VERY pessimistic about this pregnancy and not too open as to why.. just that he "expected" the numbers to be higher(he did say he would have liked the last number to be over 1000)..He has not scheduled any further blood work, just indicated that I would be called to schedule and U/S the end of next week..
I like to hear your thoughts on how you would be guiding a non-IVF patient with these numbers.."
Just wanted to thank you for your reply and let you know that we are now almost 12 weeks along with a healthy pregnancy.
Thanks again!
Tina

If you had embryo transfer on October 7, then your last period would have started around September 25 and, if the embryos implanted, you should now be 9 weeks 3 days pregnant. At this time, HCG values should give values of 10,000 - 100,000. Your numbers are quite low. even at 3 weeks gestation, the values range from 500-10,000. By now, a sonogram should show a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. I would see what the next sonogram shows. If there has not been adequate growth by the next sonogram, it sounds like a non-viable pregnancy.
I am sorry, could you please re-read this. I am NOW 11w3d pregnant with a VERY viable pregnancy. MY LMP was 9-20. We saw the heartbeat on 11-3 and have had a fllow up U/s with OBGYN on 11-23 which showed a perfectly developing baby. I am not certain how you can state that this sounds like a non-viable pregnancy? I was merely thanking you for you previous answer.
AnswerI am glad that you have a healthy pregnancy. I was commenting on your HCG values and said that a sonogram whould show a fetus and a fetal heartbeat after 6 weeks gestation no matter what the HCG values show. You did have low HCG values, but that, by itself, is not conclusive of a poor outcome. Once the sonogram shows a fetus and a fetal heartbeat, you can ignore whether the HCG values are rising or are low. I said that if the sonogram did not show adequate growth it sounded like a non viable pregnancy. The sonogram did, indeed, show a healthy fetus.
