Understanding Irregular Periods and Ovulation After Birth Control
QuestionI am 29 years old and I have never had children (although I was pregnant once at nineteen years of age and terminated the pregnancy). I was on the birth control pill most of the time for about nine years. Before I started the pill I had soemwhat irregular periods. I stopped taking the pill almost a year ago. Upon stopping I got my period once immediately afterwards, then I had heavy spotting about a month after that. The next time I bled (and quite lightly at that) was not for another three months. Since then (more than seven months) I have not had my period at all although once or twice I have had some very minimal spotting. I have recently had some blood work done and my GP said that I have low progesterone but otherwise eveything is normal. I also had a pelvic ultrasound which was also normal. I have an appointment with a gynecologist in three weeks to discuss my case. I am quite certain that I have not been ovulating because I have been checking my fertility signs (waking temp and cervical fluid) and they do not change. I would like to get pregnant sometime in the next year or so and am wondering about whether or not I should worry about my situation? Thank you.
AnswerIf you have not had a period in seven months, you first should have your period induced using Provera 10mg twice a day for five days and you should get your period within 10 days. Then you will see if you get regular periods or not. If you are not getting your period, it is doubtful that you are ovulating. You can test for ovulation with an ovulation predictor kit or with a basal body temperature determinatin. It is difficult to know if you are ovulating merely by the character of the cervical mucus. Discuss it with your gynecologist when you have your appoinment.
