Missed Period While on Birth Control: What to Do?

Question
Hi there!
I am a little bit concerned. I have had very normal periods for as long as I have been on my birth control pills. I have been taking Mircette for about 6 years. In December I missed a period. Had 4 negative pregnancy tests. My Ob-gyn said it was normal for that to happen every now and than and to start my pills back up when I was due to start again. So, I did. I had a normal period in January. This month, I have missed a period again. Same thing as December..no PMS symptoms or anything. I am just wondering what could be the culprit? Could there be something wrong with my ovary? I am not having any pain or anything. Just some concern. My pregnancy tests have come up negative again. I am married so I stay sexually active. Thank you so much for your time! Deanna

Answer
You've got to remember that when you are on birth control pills, you do not get a real period. You really only get a "breakthrough bleed" due to a change in the hormones.(Usually during the last week of placebos). It is very common to occasionally miss a "period" from time to time. It has nothing to do with your ovaries, but is merely a function of hormonal imbalance. If it continues, you may have to get a less potent birth control pill, or change to a different brand. Don't worry about it.
