Ovarian Cyst During Pregnancy: 6-Week Concerns & Management

Question
Hi.  I'm 22 years, no children, first pregnancy, date of last period: seriously unknown!  I have gone so long without a period (one time up to about 1 & 1/2 year), completely irregular... I didn't even think that I could get pregnant.  But I have recently become pregnant!(6 weeks), and have just found out that I harve a 7.5 cm cyst on m left ovary.  My doc said that we'll watch it and if it doesn't decrease in size that surgery around the 18th week is recomended, with the least amount of risk factor.  I think I have had the cyst for a while as I have had a dull aching on my ovary for about 3 years, sometimes for a month and then it would go away for about 1/2 month - a month and come back again.  Never got it checked out though.    What are your thoughts?  Also is wheatgrass safe to take in my situation?  I have heard that it works wonders, but might it expell/pose a threat to the embryo?  Are mushrooms (New Chapter's Myco Medicinals Host Defense; a mix of 17 different mushroom complexes for immune support) safe also?  I'm so sorry I have so many questions but I'm kind of in the dark.  Thank you so much for your time, and any info would be much appreciated.  Love, Marisha

Answer
It is quite common in early pregnancy, to have a corpus luteum cyst on one of your ovaries. This usually disappears at around 11-12 weeks gestation, when the placenta takes over. The corpus luteum cyst maintains the pregnancy until the placenta is formed. However, if it not a corpus luteum cyst, it may continue to grow and cause you to have some pain. The cyst , on its own, will not effect the pregnancy, but if you begin to have pain, it can be followed by sonogram and removed later on in the pregnancy. If it is not bothering you, I would not have surgery.  I am unfamiliar with "wheatgrass" or "New Chapter's MycoMedicinals Host Defense" and I would not use them during pregnancy unless you find out more about them and it is documented that they are safe.
