Fertility & Conception: Understanding the Timeline - DNA Testing Info

Question
I know this is kind of late to be asking this but I am 32 weeks and I am still confused on exactly what being fertile and conceiving differs. When you conceive does it mean that you may have gotten pregnant that day of sexual intercourse or does it mean that the sperm from like 3 days ago now has gotten to the egg. I ask this because I have to get a DNA test between 2 guys and I would really like to know what the difference is. Thanks!

Answer
HI Bobbie,

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Being "fertile" means that you have the ability to get pregnant, and the ability to "conceive."

Conception means that sperm meets egg. A  fetus starts to grow.

Yes, the sperm from 3 days prior could be the sperm that met the egg. Sperm can live for about 72 hours and it may even take them that long to make their way up into the fallopian tube to even FIND the newly released egg.

A DNA test really would be the best way to determine who the father of the baby is, if you had sex with two different men that close to your ovulation time.

I hope this has helped answer your question...good luck!
