Simple Columnar Epithelium: Function & Structure Explained

Question
I'm really confused about these questions and I would appreciate your answering.

This tissue means: simple columnar

1. Describe, in your own words, the basic function(s) carried out by this tissue.

2. Describe in your own words the basic structure of this tissue.

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Triti,

Hope this is of some help ..this is quite intricate, so I hope you can understand it all. I will break it down where I can, to make it easier for you ..

Simple Columnar tissue is the "lining" of a cavity or tube, or the cover of a surface. It serves to protect other parts of the body, to produce secretions, excretions and to function in assimilation. Under the tissue, you'll usually find a basement membrane, providing structural support for the epithelial simple columnar tissue and binding it to neighbouring structures.

Ciliated columnar (simple columnar with thin hair-like outgrowths designed to propel mucus in a specific direction, found in air passages, uterus and fallopian tubes), glandular (balancing and secreting substances such as enzymes, hormones, milk, sweat, saliva, mucus and wax) and finally stratified epithelium (having a protective function, covering the skin and lining the mouth cavity).

Hope this is of some help. I made it as simply, as I could, yet detailed. If you have any more questions, please dont hesitate to write :)
