Miscarriage: What to Expect After a Miscarriage and Medical Care

Question
when you have a mis carriage are you suppose to get cleaned out afterwards by a doctor

Answer
Hi Dana
I'm assuming that you've had a miscarriage and not yet seen a doctor?
If this is the case, I'd recommend going to see your medical practitioner to get checked over and make sure all is ok.

A D&C (dilation & curettage) is performed under a general anaesthetic & involves dilating the cervix & scraping the uterus to remove any tissue. It is usually performed if you are experiencing prolonged and/or heavy bleeding caused by tissue remaining in the uterus. Sometimes you will be given an internal ultrasound to investigate if any remaining tissue is there.
Alternately if you have an impending miscarriage or you have just started the process and it's diagnosed by a doctor (usually through an emergency ultrasound) then you may be offered this procedure to ensure all the tissue is removed. This prevents any future problems and can reduce the trauma caused by miscarriage than if the mother experienced it naturally. Not everyone experiences just a 'heavy period' & it can sometimes take days for the process to start, which can happen anywhere at any time.

I hope this has helped. If you need any more help then please don't hesitate to contact me.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
