Lumpectomy vs. Simple Mastectomy for Stage 1 Breast Cancer: A Patient's Concerns

Question
Dear Dr. Nordquist,

I have invasive ductal cancer - size 1cm - stage 1 - grade 3

My Dr. recommended a lumpectomy followed by mammosite or radiation treatments. I'm very scared and don't know what to do.  I'm having this strong feeling that maybe I should have a simple mastectomy. I am having local anesthesia- had a problem with general anesthesia when I was young, didn't wake up for 5 days. I am 75yrs. I know I have to make up my own mind. I have no one else to talk to.  I would appreciate your expert opinion.  My surgery is September 14, not much time left and so confused.

Thank You

Patrica

Answer
You SHOULD follow the advice of your doctor! A lumpectomy is enough - IF followed by radiation therapy! That is what I would suggest! When we have the pathology report of your tumor we will also know if there is any advantage in giving you hormone treatment or not. Good luck!
