Early Pregnancy Ultrasound Concerns: No Heartbeat Detected - Seeking Advice

Question
On Friday, Dec. 22, I was 8 weeks and 1 d. I had an u/s performed and the tech was unable to detect a heartbeat, I am very worried b/c they weren't able to tell me anything. I am not understanding how I was able to have an u/s on 12/11/2006 and my doctor and I was able to see the heart thumping on the sonogram, and I was 6 weeks and 4d. My bloodwork HCG & progesterone) from my first prenatal visit looks good. I don't know if I should be stressing, which is not good. I now have to wait until after Christmas before my doctor's office opens to be seen. I am not having any pain or bleeding. I have read from many books and the internet that a baby's heartbeat can be detected at 8-9 weeks or 10-12 weeks; I'm so confused I don't really know what to believe. I understand completely ever womans' pregnancy is different. Please enlighten me.

Answer
Dear Rachel,

Until you know something for sure from your doctor, there is nothing for CERTAIN to stress about. The tech should have been able to pick up the heartbeat at this point, but we do not know about this particular tech or other various factors.

My guess is that your doctor will confirm any finding that the tech's report states by his own ultrasound or Doppler reading as soon as possible. Until that time, try to think positive.

I'll have a good thought for you and try to enjoy your Christmas!
