Early Pregnancy Concerns: Spotting & No Fetal Pole at 6 Weeks

Question
Thanks for taking the time to help me!

My LMP was 2/4/08, but I ovulated on either CD15 or CD16. I have been having some spotting off an on for close to 2 weeks now. Hardly any cramping though. I went in for an early u/s last week (I would have been right about 6 weeks gestation)and to check my hcg level.
My hcg level was 16,728 which they said was normal for the 6 week period. The u/s showed a normal appearing gestational sac and normal yolk sac, but no fetal pole. I am scheduled for another u/s this week. Is not seeing a fetal pole at 6 weeks normal? How likely is this pregnancy going to continue?

Answer
Dear Ali,

The gestational sac can typically be visualized as early as 4.5 weeks of gestation and the yolk sac at about 5 weeks. The embryo can usually be observed and measured by about 5.5 weeks. A visible heartbeat can often be seen and detected by ultrasound at about 6 weeks and is usually clearly detectable by 7 weeks.

Since your hCG levels are right on track, it may be that dates are just slightly off. Getting a follow-up ultrasound in another week in standard. I would not worry over much yet. I would be MUCH more concerned if your hCG levels were lower or falling.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and will have a good thought for you!
