Classical Incision & VBAC Risk: Understanding Braxton Hicks Contractions

Question
I have had only one csection which was a classical insicion and I am now pregnant again.. I am 35 weeks and having lots and lots of BH ctx.. I was in hospital this past weekend because of my BH but they send me home because my cervix was not dilating... I am still having them anywhere from 5 min apart to 20 min apart to 1 hour .. it depends.. I feel the tightening not reallly painful... Now what I am wondering is.. . Can these painless BH cause my uterus to rupture??   or do I have to have real true PAINFUL contractions...   ?  thats why I am so confused and I dont want to have to keep going back to hospital everytime I get a bout of BH which I seem to be having alot of in the last week or so... I am very scared dont know what to do .. need some advice other than my own doctor just to see where Im at... thanks in advance alot..

Answer
Dear Diana,

We normally would not be concerned about Braxton Hicks contractions causing a uterine rupture in a woman with a history of a C-section. BH contractions are normally of much less intensity than a true contraction and do not cause the uterine/cervical changes as you described.

There are several ways you can try to relieve Braxton Hicks contractions. If you have been sitting when the contractions occur, try going for a walk. If you feel the Braxton Hicks contractions while you are active, try sitting or lying down. Some women find a warm bath (less than 30 minutes) to be helpful. Also, drinking a glass or two of water or warm tea might help.

If the BH contractions do not lessen OR if they would increase in intensity or frequency, go ahead and talk to your doctor about your concerns. It would not be unusual for a repeat C-section to be scheduled at around 37-38 weeks, as long as they are sure of dating and know the baby is mature enough for birth.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. Be well!
