QuestionHello, I hope you might be able to help me. My husband had a vasectomy a few years ago and it was tested right after the procedure and it worked ok, it hasn't been tested since. I was late on my period about 10 weeks ago when it came the cramps were terrible, but the period itself was very light and short (3 days, normally 6-7 days or more). Well right before that period I had white liquid coming from my nipples, I thought it was in my mind. After the period I let it go. By the way the doctor's office did a urine test that came back negative. Well, about a week before my next period was due I had the white liquid again, it lasted for about 2 days that time and then I got my period again on time but again very light and only 3 days and no cramping at all (unusual). What do you think might be going on? I have an appointment for the gyn next week for a check up on everything, but I'm impatient. Any help or sudgestions you might be able to give would be greatly appreiated. Oh by the way my pills that I take are prednisone, calcium, lipdor and toprol in case there might be something in one of those to cause any of this. Thanks again.
AnswerDear Samantha,
If your husband was tested at a "0" sperm count after the vasectomy, then it is unlikely that the two of you have conceived a pregnancy. Vasectomy failure occurs in less than 1% of cases. A vasectomy is deemed successful unless there is still any amount of sperm left after the procedure. Most surgeons suggest that a vasectomy has to be repeated if sperm are present after 2 consecutive semen analysis performed at 6 and 12 weeks post-vasectomy.
As a general rule, the only time when fluid should be leaking from a breast is during pregnancy and breast-feeding. When it happens any other time, it is best to get the breast or breasts examined by a physician just to be sure that there isn't some underlying health problem that needs to be addressed. If fluid is leaking from both breasts, chances are good that a hidden condition is affecting the whole body in a systemic way. This may be an endocrine problem. Another possibility is that a medication could be the cause. Many different kinds of prescription drugs, including Prozac and birth control pills, are known to mess with the breasts.
I have heard of rare occurrences of breast enlargement/swelling with Lipitor, but not leakage. I can find nothing on this side effect with Toprol. I cannot imagine calcium being the culprit, but you can ask your doctor. Now, in regard to the Prednisone, changes in menstrual periods is considered a more serious side effect of this medication and should be reported to your prescribing doctor. I would make sure that all the symptoms you have described to me are reported to that doctor.
I hope this has helped you in some small way. I wish you well.
