BCP & Cycle Irregularities: What to Know After Starting Birth Control

Question
I had my last period on 5/24/2007, at that time I decided to start using Yasmin birth control pills. I have not used BCP in several years. I started the pills the Sunday after my period started on 5/24/2007. We used a back-up protection for 7 days as recommended on the label. The problem is I missed several pills during this month...at times I missed two in a row. I am a RN of 6 years and I know better...please tell me there is a chance that my cycle is just in shock because my period never came! Its time to start a new pack of pills, but I'm not sure if this is smart since I was careless. What are the chances that I am pregnant?

Answer
Dear Aishah,

OK, you know the answer...   :-)  There IS a chance, since you missed some of the pills. However, you may also be experiencing a lack of bleeding due to the hormones in the pills.

So - you should test for pregnancy. Make sure to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results. If the test is negative, go ahead and start the new pack, but be aware of any symptoms which may suggest an early pregnancy. If any begin after 7-10 days, test again. AND try associating the pills with something you do around the same time every single day - brushing teeth, 1st cup of coffee, whatever will help to remember.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
