QuestionI had my period on the 28th of sept. and it was regular and has been regular for the longest. But on the 11th of oct. I started another period and it is still on now. And on the 9th of oct. I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend of 4 years. Could this be a sign of pregnancy? But for the past 4 years me and him has had unprotected sex on numerous occasions and I have never gotten pregnant. Can you tell me what is going on? Please and thank you.
AnswerDear Teontise,
*First*
Please accept my apologies for the delay in answering. Our cable (TV and internet) went out early Saturday and after several BOGUS stories, the tech came today and regretfully informed us we were mistakenly shut off for our NEIGHBOR's non-payment. So... as frustrated as all of you may be at having to wait longer for an answer, try being me with a husband without football all weekend!!!
Now to your question...
Typically, bleeding within a day or two of sex, especially bleeding that is the same volume/consistency as a regular period, is not a normal "symptom" of pregnancy. Some women do experience implantation bleeding early in a pregnancy, but this usually occurs 6-12 days after conception occurs and is lighter in volume and shorter in duration than a regular period.
There are many potential causes for metrorrhagia (bleeding between periods). Possible causes can include:
-Uterine fibroids or polyps
-Injury or disease of the vaginal opening (caused by intercourse, infection, polyp, genital warts, ulcer, or varicose veins)
-Vaginal injury from insertion of foreign objects, from malignancy, or from infection
-Dry vaginal walls resulting from lack of estrogen after menopause
-Pregnancy complicated by abortion (spontaneous or induced)
-Ectopic pregnancy
-Fluctuation in hormone levels
-Stopping and starting birth control pills or estrogens
-Low thyroid function
-IUD use (may cause occasional spotting)
-Drugs such as anticoagulants
-Cervical conization or cauterization procedures
-Emotional/mental stress
This may be a one cycle occurrence that does not occur again. However, if the bleeding continues or if you experience it again in the next cycle, you should see your doctor for a thorough examination and evaluation so that a cause can be determined.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and again - thank you for your patience.
