PMS and Immune System Weakness: Understanding the Connection

Question
I am wondering why I seem to get sick every month right before my period.  It might be a sore throat or the flu or anything.  It just seems like my immune system putts out totally the week (few days) before my period and I catch whatever is going around.  Other wise I seem very healthy.  Why is this happening and what can I do to remedy this?  Thank you.

Answer
Dear Rose,

PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome) can affect all major body systems: immune, digestive, circulatory, nervous, endocrine and dermatologic. I would actually suggest taking a good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement with antioxidants on a daily basis. During the week leading up to your period, you might consider taking an extra 1000 mg dose of Vitamin C, or drinking a full glass of orange juice, every day as a boost to your immune system.

If you have allergies or sensitivities to any substances, you should obviously discuss adding these or any supplements with your doctor.

As an added note: thorough, frequent handwashing is a must to avoid transmission of viruses and bacteria, especially during the upcoming cold/flu season. And getting a flu shot would be a great idea!

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
