Driving & Daily Activities in Late Pregnancy: What's Okay?

Question
I had a sonogram along with an exam today at my OB's office. I am due in three weeks, the baby is already 6lbs 3oz by the sonogram and I am 1cm dilated already. But I want to know if I can still drive. My OB did not say anything about that. And what other things can I or can I not do at this stage?

Answer
Dear Amanda,

Yes, you can drive and do anything you normally would do in your daily activities. Of course, you don't want to over-exert yourself or lift heavy objects, etc,..., but normal daily activities are perfectly fine. If you are past the 37 week mark, you are actually considered full-term. If you were to deliver today, your baby would not be considered a premature baby.

You may begin to have Braxton-Hicks contractions soon, if you haven't already. If the contractions do not dissipate when you change your activity (if resting, try walking around or if on feet, try resting), then it is true labor and not Braxton-Hicks. Here are some signs of true labor:
-Contractions come regularly, usually 4-6 minutes apart and can become closer together. Usually last 30-70 seconds.
-Contractions become stronger with time. You may also feel vaginal pressure.
-Contractions continue no matter what position changes you make or how much you drink.

As a general rule, don't time contractions until they are very strong and regular. Plan to go to the hospital when they are so strong that you cannot hold a conversation during one, closer than 5-6 minutes apart, and continue in that pattern for about an hour.

Obviously, you should talk to your own personal doctor about his/her wishes regarding when they prefer you to call or go in, but these are general guidelines for you.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and a blessed delivery!
