Sciatica and Leg Pain During Pregnancy: Causes & Relief

Question
I am 6 weeks Pregnant and I am having sharp pains shooting up and down my left leg, and than my leg goes numb.

Answer
From your description, it sounds as though you are experiencing sciatica, or another type of nerve problem. Since you are only six weeks along, it is probably unrelated to your pregnancy.

But you should be evaluated by either a Chiropractor, or Orthopedist to determine the cause and provide effective treatment. Most nerve problems result from a problem at the spine where the nerve exits the central nervous system.

Some Chiropractors specialize in pre and post natal problems, and would be a good choice for you. You certainly don't want to have this problem continue, especially as your leg goes numb. This could increase the likelihood of either a fall or other injury in the latter part of your pregnancy.

As you baby gets bigger, your pelvis will naturally tip in response, and this could worsen your condition. It would be wise for you to try to resolve this problem as soon as possible.

If you get advise to just rest and/or wait and see, seek a second opinion.
