Running After Pregnancy: Safety & Postpartum Concerns

Question
I am asking about someone who has had two children who would like to run a half marathon. Are there any concerns ,for instance sciatic nerve issue's?
thanx

Answer
During the initial postpartum period, when the ligaments are still soft and long (due to pregnancy hormones) running and other high impact aerobic activities are not advised. Ligaments provide support, stability, and proper alignment to joints and after childbirth do not function as well as they should.

But after about six months or so this potential problem resolves. Sciatic nerve problems can hinder proper training for a half marathon or other athletic events, irregardless of pregnancy.

Some pregnant and postpartum women experience too much movement in the sacroiliac joint, which can lead to sciatica symptoms. Pelvic instability can be problematic for some runners, but not necessarily all.

The runner in question should train properly, gradually increasing her strength and endurance in preparation for the event.
